One of the worst commercials that I saw during the Super bowl this year was the HomeAway.com commercial. It was so terrible because it touched on different hotel issues but ran borderline inappropriate. Baby being flung against the wall? Uh hello, child abuse? It just made me realize that I will not be using the site for finding a place to stay during vacation. I guess it would be hard to follow up to last year’s commercial with Chevy Chase as his infamous character, Clark Griswold. That is what I noticed a lot this year for the commercials, it was a sequel to last years but it flopped instead of flipped.
The Volkswagen commercial with the little kid as Darth Vader was extremely adorable! You could only imagine how much George Lucas was banking off of this. I think it was a good way to promote the new car that they have because it not only reached the leisure consumers, but also the consumers who buy for their family. Not only can this new innovative car be luxurious, but it could also be a family car. It’s like a whole new spin on the family wagon is what I got out of it. The commercials this year were not as good as last year, which is not really a surprise to me. Of course we saw sequels of last year’s commercials, because they did such an amazing job but following it up isn’t always the easiest thing to pull off. Hopefully next year these companies figure something out, or they are blowing a boat load of cash on 30 seconds that will probably not lead to any profit gain.
There were a lot more commercials that were good and extremely bad, but Volkswagen and the HomeAway.com commercials were the two that stood out the most to me.
